Kait Simon  -  Hope

The cover has a cute Kait Simon standing next to a wall which has a cross scratched in the wall.   The music sounds like a nice girl trying to sound street, which I suspect many will identify with.

At times lyrics reveal a lack of clear direction, even contradicting themselves within the same song.  Is this suppose to be the “oh me, oh my… what am I going to do, confusion of the human condition”  ?  Here’s an example from the song “Stay”  “Though I’ll bring disgrace to your name, Throw Your love in your face, I’ll try not to cause you pain”.   This sounds like the end of a bad date and someone’s trying to let the other one down easy, while kneeing them in the crotch at the same time.

One exception to lyrical mire is the song “Fatherhood” which is rather straight forward in  message……  Although I find myself wishing she’d just come out and say who this “good” Father is in the song.

Kait covers a wide range of music energy in this five song EP, thanks in part I’m sure to her restless musical partner John Grafton.  I admire Kait for attempting to tackle such a wide variety of material.  I think it shows depth character and a good breadth of artistic vision.   “These Days” shows nicely done Zeplinistic acoustic guitar on the verses.

Kait’s voice shows potential but she’ll have to keep working if she going to make the final cut.  I’m optimistic and look forward to hearing the next CD.
